Course Description: Studying Rustem Pasha is a series of online classes that will look in depth at the motifs and tile compositions unique to the mosque. Students will be introduced to the architectural history of the mosque and the unique qualities of this location. Students will learn a multitude of motifs, compositions and border patterns. This class features some beginner motifs and patterns (workshops 1,2,3). If you are a beginner and want to feel comfortable throughout the whole course, class 1,2,3 is highly advised. Each class’ materials builds upon the previous working towards complex compositions and motifs. In each session, careful instruction and handouts are given to make sure each student understands and can work toward finishing the patterns taught in class.

Workshop ONE: Rustem Pasha Penc and Hatayi Motifs
Workshop TWO: Rumi and Penc Tiles
Workshop THREE: Rumi, Tulips and Carnations
Workshop FOUR: Flowers and Clouds
Workshop FIVE: Tulips, Leaves and Clouds
Workshop SIX: Border Tiles

Workshop ONE: Rustem Pasha Penc and Hatayi Motifs
Students will be introduced to the architectural history of Rustem Pasha Mosque and its unique position within the Ottoman Architecture canon. Students will learn 4-6 penc and hatayi motifs unique to the mosque, some of which can be used in future compositions.

Workshop TWO: Rumi and Penc Tiles
Students will learn to create two basic tile compositions featuring penc and rumi motifs. Students will learn how to geometrically plan the compositions so that the patterns seamlessly repeat.

Workshop THREE: Rumi, Tulips and Carnations
In this class students will learn to create a tile composition with two lines of symmetry and biomorphic organization. Students will learn two new unique patterns, along with the carnation and violet motifs.

Workshop FOUR: Flowers and Clouds
Students will learn to create all the motifs needed for the penc and cloud band tile. Students will learn to create a 20cm x 24cm rectangle geometrically. Students will learn how to plan the composition and place the motifs. Students will also learn how to create the cloud band motif.

Workshop FIVE: Tulips, Leaves and Clouds
Students will learn to create the large tulip motif as well as the saz leaf motif. Students will learn how to plan the tile composition and placement of the motifs. Students will also be guided through painting their tiles.

Workshop SIX: Border Tiles
In this final class, students will be presented with the many distinct border patterns found on site. Students will learn to create two different border patterns that can be used in conjunction with any of the previously learned tile compositions.

 Materials Needed for the Class:

Sketchbook or preferred sketching paper (A4 or A3)
Watercolour paper A4 (if using watercolour)
Tracing paper A4 or by the roll
Mechanical pencil 0.5
Eraser
Ruler
Compass (must reach a minimum of 12cm when fully opened)
Masking tape/ washi tape
Black waterproof fine liner 0.3 or 0.5 (staedtler or Pigma Micron work well) 
Coloured pencils, watercolour pencils or watercolours plus a brush
