In this online class we will explore the historical and visual aspects of mihrabs and monumental entrances from across the Islamic world. Each class will feature a curated historical contextualization of the chosen site and patterns. Each class will be centered around patterns unique to each prayer niche (mihrab) or monument entrance. Biomorphic(vegetal) and geometric patterns will be explored in order to complete the patterns or compositions. This class can be enjoyed by beginners and novices. In each session, careful instruction and handouts are given to make sure each student understands and can work toward finishing the patterns taught in class.
Workshop ONE: Rustem Pasha Mihrab (Biomorphic Patterns)
This class will focus on the biomorphic patterns of Rustem Pasha mosque mihrab. We will focus on creating the central border composition and learn how to create simple hatayi and penc motifs as well as investigating the underlying structures of Iznik patterns and their leaves. Traditional ceramic painting methods will be discussed and a watercolour/ gouache alternative will be given for the students as an alternative.
Workshop TWO: Isfahan Madrasa Imami (Geometry, Biomorphic)
This class will focus on the MET’s Isfahan Madrasa Imami. We will construct the 6 fold pattern that contains all of the Persian style motifs. We will then work on creating the biomorphic patterns that lay inside of the geometric shapes. Colour and Persian ceramics techniques and materials will be discussed in class.
Workshop THREE: Aleppo Umayyad Mosque Mihrab (Geometry and Biomorphic patterns)
This class will focus on creating the geometric patterns found within a detailed pattern of the mihrab. We will then work on the individual biomorphic pattern elements that can be repeated and completed by the student after class. Colour options and finishing the pattern will be discussed and demonstrated in class so that students can feel at ease when it comes time for to assemble and complete their compositions.
Workshop FOUR: Akbar’s Tomb Entrance, Sikandra (Arch geometry and biomorphic patterns)
This class will focus on the large floral motifs found in the archway of Akbar’s tomb of Sikandra. We will first construct the archway on paper and then add in each of the design elements and floral motifs to complete the pattern. We will use the same minimal terra cotta, black and white palette the Mughal’s used to experiment with this composition.
